Benefits of Public & Private SSH Keys

If your headless, or remote, VPS is visible over the Internet, you should use public key authentication instead of passwords, if at all possible. This is because SSH keys provide a more secure way of logging in compared to using a password alone. While a password can eventually be cracked with a brute-force attack, SSH keys are nearly impossible to decipher by brute force alone. With public key authentication, every computer has (i) a public and (ii) a private "key" (two mathematically-linked algorithms that are effectively impossible to crack).

Today, OpenSSH is the default SSH implementation on Unix-like systems such as Linux and OS X. Key-based authentication is the most secure of several modes of authentication usable with OpenSSH, such as plain passwords and Kerberos tickets. Other authentication methods are only used in very specific situations. SSH can use either "RSA" (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) or "DSA" ("Digital Signature Algorithm") keys. Both of these were considered state-of-the-art algorithms when SSH was invented, but DSA has come to be seen as less secure in recent years. RSA is the only recommended choice for new keys, so this tutorial uses "RSA key" and "SSH key" interchangeably.

When you log in to your DigitalOcean VPS, the SSH server uses the public key to "lock" messages in a way that can only be "unlocked" by your private key. This means that even the most resourceful attacker cannot snoop on, or interfere with, your session. As an extra security measure, some users and most SSH programs store the private key in a passphrase-protected format, to provide a window of time in which you can disable your compromised public key, should your computer be stolen or broken in to. For these reasons, public key authentication is a much better solution than passwords for most people. In fact, by not employing a passphrase on your private key, you will have the ability to automate parts of your configuration management with secure, automatic log-ins, such as incremental off-site backups, manage your DigitalOcean assets via the DigitalOcean API, and more.

Key-Based SSH Logins

You can save the same public key on as many cloud servers as you'd like, while your private key is saved on a client from which you log in to the server. Then, you can disable the normal username/password login procedure, which means that only people with a valid private/public key pair can log in; making your system more secure, because it will be impervious to brute-force attacks.

Automate the Creation of New Droplets

Another useful purpose that SSH keys can serve is in the creation of DigitalOcean droplets. As you know, when you spin up a droplet, you have to wait for an e-mail with your password. Although this email is very convenient, there is a more secure (and faster) way of gaining access to your new cloud server without the need for email. This can be done by saving your public key in the DigitalOcean Control Panel. To accomplish this:

Prerequisites

This tutorial assumes that you are familiar with DigitalOcean's guide on How to Log Into Your Droplet with PuTTY (for windows users).

PuTTY Key Generator (a.k.a. PuTTYgen)

While PuTTY is a client program for SSH (in addition to Telnet and Rlogin), it is not a port of or otherwise based on OpenSSH. Consequently, PuTTY does not have native support for reading OpenSSH's SSH-2 private key files. However, PuTTY does have a companion named PuTTYgen (an RSA and DSA key generation utility), that can convert OpenSSH private key files into PuTTY's format; allowing you to connect to your cloud server from a Windows machine, with the added security that SSH keys provide.

PuTTYgen is a (free) open-source utility and can be downloaded from the maintainer's website. PuTTYgen is what you will use to generate your SSH keys for use in PuTTY. To start, all you need to do is download the exectuable files (.exe) and save them on the computer that you'll use to connect to your VPS, e.g. on the desktop. You will not need to "install" PuTTYgen, because it is a standalone application.

Generating OpenSSH-compatible Keys for Use with PuTTY

To generate a set of RSA keys with PuTTYgen:

  1. Start the PuTTYgen utility, by double-clicking on its .exe file;
  2. For Type of key to generate, select RSA;
  3. In the Number of bits in a generated key field, specify either 2048 or 4096 (increasing the bits makes it harder to crack the key by brute-force methods);
  4. Click the Generate button;
  5. Move your mouse pointer around in the blank area of the Key section, below the progress bar (to generate some randomness) until the progress bar is full;
  6. A private/ public key pair has now been generated;
  7. In the Key comment field, enter any comment you'd like, to help you identify this key pair, later (e.g. your e-mail address; home; office; etc.) -- the key comment is particularly useful in the event you end up creating more than one key pair;
  8. Optional: Type a passphrase in the Key passphrase field & re-type the same passphrase in the Confirm passphrase field (if you would like to use your keys for automated processes, however, you should not create a passphrase);
  9. Click the Save public key button & choose whatever filename you'd like (some users create a folder in their computer named my_keys);
  10. Click the Save private key button & choose whatever filename you'd like (you can save it in the same location as the public key, but it should be a location that only you can access and that you will NOT lose! If you lose your keys and have disabled username/password logins, you will no longer be able log in!);
  11. Right-click in the text field labeled Public key for pasting into OpenSSH authorized_keys file and choose Select All;
  12. Right-click again in the same text field and choose Copy.

NOTE: PuTTY and OpenSSH use different formats for public SSH keys. If the SSH Key you copied starts with "---- BEGIN SSH2 PUBLIC KEY ...", it is in the wrong format. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully. Your key should start with "ssh-rsa AAAA ...."

Save The Public Key On The Server

Now, you need to paste the copied public key in the file ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on your server.

  1. Log in to your destination server; seeHow to Log Into Your Droplet with PuTTY (for windows users)
  2. If your SSH folder does not yet exist, create it manually:
  3. mkdir ~/.ssh chmod 0700 ~/.ssh touch ~/.ssh/authorized_keys chmod 0644 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
  4. Paste the SSH public key into your ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file (seeInstalling and Using the Vim Text Editor on an Cloud Server):
  5. sudo vim ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
  6. Tap the key on your keyboard & right-click your mouse to paste.
  7. To save, tap the following keys on your keyboard (in this order): , , , , .

Create a PuTTY Profile to Save Your Server's Settings

In PuTTY, you can create (and save) profiles for connections to your various SSH servers, so you don't have to remember, and continually re-type, redundant information.

  1. Start PuTTY by double-clicking its executable file;
  2. PuTTY's initial window is the Session Category (navigate PuTTY's various categories, along the left-hand side of the window);
  3. In the Host Name field, enter the IP address of your VPS or its fully qualified domain name (FQDN); seeHow to Set Up a Host Name with DigitalOcean
  4. Enter the port number in the Port field (for added security, consider changing your server's SSH port to a non-standard port. See Step Five of Initial Server Setup with Ubuntu 12.04
  5. Select SSH under Protocol;
  6. Along the left-hand side of the window, select the Data sub-category, under Connection;
  7. Specify the username that you plan on using, when logging in to the SSH server, and whose profile you're saving, in the Auto-login username field;
  8. Expand the SSH sub-category, under Connection;
  9. Highlight the Auth sub-category and click the Browse button, on the right-hand side of the PuTTY window;
  10. Browse your file system and select your previously-created private key;
  11. Return to the Session Category and enter a name for this profile in the Saved Sessions field, e.g. user@123.456.78.9 or user@host.yourdomain.tld;
  12. Click the Save button for the Load, Save or Delete a stored session area.

Now you can go ahead and log in to user@1.2.3.4 and you will not be prompted for a password. However, if you had set a passphrase on your public key, you will be asked to enter the passphrase at that time (and every time you log in, in the future).

Disable Username/Password Logins

Once you have verified that your key-based logins are working, you may elect to disable username/password logins to achieve better security. To do this, you need to edit your SSH server's configuration file. On Debian/ Ubuntu systems, this file is located at /etc/ssh/sshd_config.

sudo vim /etc/ssh/sshd_config

Tap the key on your keyboard and edit the lines, referenced below:

[...] PasswordAuthentication no [...] UsePAM no [...]

To save, tap the following keys on your keyboard (in this order): , , , , . Now, reload the SSH server's configuration:

sudo reload ssh

I downloaded Steam and tried Rocket League, just to see how it would perform. While the gaming experience was far from perfect and definitely wasn’t running at 60fps, it was at least playable. I could also watch 4K videos on YouTube via edge, edit photos using Affinity Photo, and more.

Overall, I was impressed by the stability, smoothness in animations, and performance this early in the game. Geekbench scores were relatively impressive considering that I was working with half of the system’s resources when allocating four cores to the VM.

Windows running on Apple Silicon via Parallels is by no means perfect, but it’s much better than I thought it would be at this juncture. If there’s a certain Windows app that you’d like to run — one that’s not mission-critical — you should give it a go; you might be surprised by the results.

What do you think? Would you consider running a Windows VM on your M1 Mac?

How To Activate An XP Mode VM On Windows 10

Updated about 3 yrs, 8 mths ago (March 8, 2018). Know a better answer? Let me know!

You are running Windows 10 and you want keep using an XP Mode virtual machine after its activation has expired.

Windows XP Mode only works under Windows 7. If you need to run XP on Windows 10, you should start from scratch with a new XP install and a valid XP licence key.

However, if you are one of the many people who have an XP Mode virtual machine and need to continue using it for some reason, this is one way to achieve that.

Warning: this may violate the XP Mode licensing agreement.

There are many ways to run an XP VM on Windows 10. One way is to use Oracle VM VirtualBox and either use the existing XP Mode or extract the files from an XP Mode download you have.

However, running XP Mode on anything other than Windows 7 will result in the XP virtual machine not being activated, and there does not appear to be any way to activate it.

If your XP VM has already had its activation expire, you will not be able to login.

To bypass this:

  • Start your XP VM in Safe Mode (press F8 while booting)
  • Select “Safe Mode with Command Prompt”
  • Once it has booted to a command prompt, type "start explorer" to start explorer

You will now be logged into your expired XP VM, but it is still not activated.

To bypass the activation:

  • Click on “Start”, then “Run”, and type in “regedit” (presumably “start regedit” in the command prompt would achieve the same thing)
  • Go to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents”
    • Expand “WPAEvents”, you’ll see the “OOBETimer”, double-click it, and delete the original value and type in “FF D5 71 D6 8B 6A 8D 6F
        D5 33 93 FD”
    • Click “OK”
  • Right click on the “WPAEvents” folder and click on “Permissions…”
    • under “SYSTEM”, click “Deny Full Control”
    • Click “Yes” to the warning message
  • Reboot back to normal Windows XP

Warning: this may violate the XP Mode licensing agreement.

Introduction

I had just installed Windows XP x32 SP3 in a VirtualBox virtual machine (VM), so as to run WinXP on Linux. Now I had to activate it. This turned out to be more complicated than I had expected.

It took me a couple of tries to develop a WinXP VM that worked the way I wanted. The first time, WinXP became activated by magic. Not really, but I was not quite sure what I had done to activate it. It could have been just the official method; it may have been something else. I was not entirely sure. But after that first time, no magic came to my assistance. At some point, the activation window informed me that I had used this key too many times. It seemed that was incorrect, but I didn’t want to argue; I just wanted a solution.

I intended to choose the phone activation alternative. In fact, I used Skype to dial that number. But this was my first time using Skype on Linux, so this was the time to discover that the headset I used for Skype was not being recognized by Linux. That was going to be a whole separate issue to troubleshoot. I could have used another phone to activate, of course, but then I realized that I might find myself having to activate again, one or more times, until I got this WinXP VM configured the way I liked. In addition, I wanted to avoid going online if possible. I was using this WinXP VM to virtualize Windows applications; that called for a system with a bare minimum of processes running; therefore I didn’t have antivirus software installed.

So: was there another way of activating, other than the usual approach of letting the activator go online, or calling a number for Microsoft’s permission to install? A search led, in fact, to several alternate methods. I decided to explore those, and this post was born.

How to Tell if WinXP Is Activated

The first question was whether I even needed to activate. I had noticed that WinXP would put a keyring icon in the system tray (at the lower right corner of the screen) and also at various places in the Start Menu, such as at the top of the Start > All Programs list. But it seemed that that icon would disappear, sometimes, after even an unsuccessful activation effort.

Another approach was to go into Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information > System Summary > look for Activation Status. This would supposedly notify the user to activate the system if needed; but someone said this indication might not always be there, even if the system was not yet activated. One time, I noticed that Start > Control Panel > System said that Windows was registered to me, and yet Start > All Programs still included an Activate Windows icon — but when I clicked on it, it said Windows was already activated. (Confusing!)

A different approach called for Start > Run > %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a (or simply oobe/msoobe /a). That command would usually trigger the activation window. Choosing “Yes, let’s activate Windows over the Internet now” at that point (if that option was offered) might lead past the activation process, if the machine was already activated. Or at least that was what had seemed to happen to me, the first time, when I say that my system was registered by magic.

The WPA.DBL Activation Method

The alternate activation method I tried first was mentioned by Lifehacker and detailed by Online Tech Tips. The latter explained that I could activate WinXP simply by copying C:\Windows\System32\wpa.dbl from the previous installation of Windows XP on this same computer. They warned that it would not work on a different machine. I had already activated WinXP on a previous VirtualBox VM, identical in all regards except that, this time, I set the virtual hard disk drive (HDD) to be 20GB rather than 10GB. I was not sure whether that difference would make this appear to be a different machine.

In this method, I needed to boot into Safe Mode. Normally, I would do that by hitting F8 as the computer started to boot. But in the case of this VM, the advice was rather to boot into Normal Mode and then go into Start > Run > msconfig > BOOT.INI tab > check /SAFEBOOT > OK > Restart. Once I was in Safe Mode, Online Tech Tips said, I needed to use Windows Explorer to go into C:\Windows\System32 > rename wpa.dbl to be wpa.old > copy in the wpa.dbl from my previous installation. Then I had to go back to the BOOT.INI tab and uncheck /SAFEBOOT > OK > Restart. That put me back in Normal Mode. That method did not work. Upon reboot, I got a message:

Windows Product Activation

This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now?

Normally, I would have 30 days after installing WinXP before activation would be compelled. In this case, it seemed that I had triggered this message by trying to activate in the normal way and getting that message (above) that I had used this product key too many times. When I clicked No at this point, I expected to be locked out of the system. But instead, I was allowed to proceed into WinXP as usual.

I guessed that this method had not worked, for me, because of that change from a 10GB to 20GB system drive in the VM. It was also possible that my previous activation efforts had somehow muddied the waters.

Incidentally, use of msconfig had now resulted in a System Configuration Utility message, each time I rebooted, informing me that I had to go back into msconfig > General tab > select Normal Startup > OK > Restart.

The Registry Edit Method

Next on the list, we had a method explained by WikiHow, which offered these remarks:

You can bypass the activation process by editing the Windows registry and using an OEM key, though this technically violates your license agreement with Microsoft. Only use the following if you are unable to activate and you have a legally-purchased copy of Windows XP.

Although WikiHow described the process differently, I interpreted their advice as encouraging me to begin with this registry edit file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents] "OOBETimer"=hex:ff,d5,71,d6,8b,6a,8d,6f,d5,33,93,fd ; Original setting: ; "OOBETimer"=hex:eb,54,8c,c6,0e,45,17,59,55,5b,f4,30

I pasted those lines into Notepad, named the file WinXPActivation.reg, and ran it in WinXP. It indicated that the registry had been modified successfully, and when I ran Start > Run > regedit, I could see those new values at the registry location stated in that file. Now, WikiHow said, at that same registry address, I had to right-click on the WPAEvents folder > Permissions > select SYSTEM > check the Deny Full Control box > OK > Yes > exit regedit. Next, I had to enter this command: %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a (or simply oobe/msoobe /a). This was, as above, the command to start the activator. WikiHow said that, if I had followed the foregoing steps correctly, I would now see this message:

Activate Windows

Windows Product Activation

Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit.

That is what I saw. So it worked. It had not worked for me on a previous try. Presumably I had messed up some detail in the process on that earlier attempt.

The OEM Key Method

That same WikiHow article said that, if the Registry Key Method did not work for me, I could proceed with another approach that might. This method started where the previous one left off. If the oobe/msoobe /a command didn’t give me “Windows is already activated,” then it would presumably give me the usual activation options: activate over the Internet now, activate by telephone now, or remind me to activate every few days.

The advice here was to choose “Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows.” Next, apparently there would be an option to Change Product Key. At that point, the user would enter this product key: THMPV 77D6F 94376 8HGKG VRDRQ. A search indicated that a lot of people were familiar with that key as an alternative for activating Windows XP. After entering that key, WikiHow said the user should click the Update button and then select Remind Me Later. Then restart the computer and go to Start > Run > %system. I had no idea how that sequence worked, and I did not test it, but that was the end of the WikiHow advice. (Note: this advice does not appear in the updated version of the WikiHow page, but it does appear in an archived version.)

When You Can’t Get into Windows XP

The other methods discussed in this post required the user to use tools available inside a working WinXP installation. Later, however, I encountered a situation where I was not able to get past the login screen. This happened with Windows XP installed in a VirtualBox virtual machine (VM). The first thing I got, after booting the VM, was this:

Windows Product Activation

This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now?

I clicked Yes. I got a window titled “Windows Product Activation” and a statement, “Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit.” But when I clicked OK, it logged me off and put me back at the login screen; and if I tried to log in, it presented me with the same question again: “Do you want to activate Windows now?”

A search for solutions to this infinite product activation loop led to recommendations that started with going into Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode, the advice was familiar: hit F8 as soon as Windows starts to boot. For a VirtualBox VM, that was trickier than on a native Windows installation. First, I had to click on the correct icon — there were two, and at first I chose the wrong one — to tell VirtualBox to stop showing messages about the mouse and keyboard when the VM started. Also, I had to make sure the VM was capturing my keystrokes (i.e., that I was not sending keystrokes into the host machine when I hit the keyboard). It seemed, in addition, that I had to start hitting F8 before the VM booted, and keep hitting it, not holding it down.

It took multiple tries, but eventually I got past those hindrances. At that point, I was looking at the Windows Advanced Options Menu — the one in black and white, offering a dozen options, starting with Safe Mode. I selected Safe Mode and hit Enter. It showed me only one installation: Microsoft Windows XP Professional. I hit Enter. After a few moments of loading files, I was now looking at the Safe Mode screen.

From that point, the advice offered by WikiHow was, in effect, to go to Start > Run or WinKey-R. Either way, that gave me a Run box. There, I typed rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnkand clicked OK. Nothing seemed to happen. I hoped it had done something. I went to Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart. This time, Windows XP started up normally, without an activation barrier. The methods described above confirmed that Windows was now activated, and I had no further problems after rebooting.

Other Methods

I did not explore further, except that I did develop a search to help me find methods other than those described above. It tentatively appeared that there might be a number of alternate activation methods. There may also be something useful for this purpose in my separate post on Windows 7 activation in a virtual machine.

A free and popular virtualization tool

VirtualBox is free, enterprise-ready virtualization software for Windows users. Developed by the Oracle Corporation, the tool lets users run different operating systems on their computers. It’s a feature-rich product and is one of the only professional virtualization tools available as open-source software. It’s updated regularly by its community of users, and Oracle ensures that the released product meets professional standards. VirtualBox is quite popular and also available for download on devices running macOS.

Increase agility and reduce hardware costs

Nowadays, virtual machines are becoming an integral part of businesses as well as cloud computing solutions. With VirtualBox, users can harness the power of virtualization from their home computers. With VirtualBox, you can create a representation of an operating system that significantly reduces hardware costs while boosting agility and efficiency.

What is VirtualBox used for?

When you download VirtualBox for Windows, you can easily run Mac and Linux operating systems on your native Windows device. Additionally, you can use the tool to run applications you would otherwise not have access to. It also offers all the features that make virtualization attractive.

Users can run an old operating system like Windows 8 on their Windows 10 device, or test an OS before installing it fully. They can even use the full performance of their desktops by packing multiple virtual machines onto a few hosts while saving up on a lot of hardware costs. Owing to the snapshot feature, users can easily switch to an old snapshot and avoid frequent backups whenever something goes wrong.

Easy to install for tech-savvy users

Installing VirtualBox and another operating system is quite easy if you’re technologically savvy. In case you’re inexperienced, you may have to go through the manual provided by Oracle. The installation only takes about 5 minutes on a computer with 2GB RAM. You can choose to either install the software or add support for USB and different types of networking, including host-only, bridge, and conventional. Once installed, the software offers a great user experience so you can run different operating systems and applications from your native PC environment.

Simple and easy-to-use interface

VirtualBox has a clean interface with three primary menus, which include Machine, File, and Help. You can use the Machine option to create your first guest operating system. Adding a virtual machine is as easy as pressing CTRL and N together. Once you do that, a module pops up and asks you to choose the type of operating system you want to load as well as its unique name. The latest version of the software allows you to scale the display, so you can reduce the size of the window and still make out everything.

The File option gives users access to the media manager, preference module, as well as import and export features. With VirtualBox, you can reduce or limit the CPU and IO time of any virtual machine that you’re running. By setting a limit, you can ensure that the virtual OS doesn’t drain your system resources. Apart from this, the software also offers various tools to fix bugs and increase the performance of your virtual machines.

Multiple customization options

VirtualBox supports numerous operating systems including Linux, macOS, and Oracle Solaris hosts. It provides users with the option to create a multi-platform or collated server, useful for testing and development. You can even use different customization options to personalize the user interface of the guest OS.

Integration may take a while

One of the biggest challenges of running the free version of VirtualBox is creating a guest operating system. Users don’t have the option to automate certain features and have to go at it manually. The process also requires patience on the part of the users. For instance, if you wanted to install Windows 10 or even Windows 7 using VirtualBox, adding the final touches would take time.

Fortunately, the software offers different guided modes, so users have some help when they need it. VirtualBox doesn’t offer a deep integration option, which is quite an advantage if you’re concerned about privacy. This means that if a virtual machine is vulnerable to a virus attack, the host system isn't compromised. While paid software offers much better integration between the host and guest OS, VirtualBox offers all the necessary tools needed for virtualization.

Offers exhaustive documentation

VirtualBox is open-source software, which means that it has a vast online community. Typical to all such software programs, these communities create a wide range of information and help. Users of the software get easy access to technical documents, changelog, operation manuals, FAQs, and more. There also exists a Bug Tracker page, where users can report bugs and track any status updates. Apart from an array of information, Oracle also offers live chat, so users can easily connect with a representative for any questions.

Is VirtualBox free?

Formerly known as Sun VirtualBox, the base package of the virtualization tool is free to download and use. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License and is available as open-source software. While the base pack is free, Oracle also provides an extension pack with added features. Since it falls under the Personal Use and Evaluation License, corporate users need to purchase a commercial license from Oracle.

Is VirtualBox secure?

VirtualBox is completely safe to download and use. The software offers added security in terms of protection from malware. A key advantage of using VirtualBox is that it is quite secure. Malware doesn’t function properly in a virtualized environment. A virus usually shuts down the moment it detects a virtual environment. By using VirtualBox, you can protect your hard drive from viruses, test new operating systems, and run applications that are incompatible with your existing OS.

VirtualBox has some alternatives

While VirtualBox is one of the most prominent open-source virtualization software, it does have some competitors. If you’re looking for other virtualization tools, you can check out VMware Workstation Pro, Virtual PC, and VMware Workstation Player.

Which is better - VMware or VirtualBox?

Unless you’re looking for a virtualization software for company work, you should go with VirtualBox. Though VMware offers better drag-and-drop functions between guest and host as well as a better interface, it is limited in the snapshot feature. VirtualBox, on the other hand, offers unlimited snapshots - a feature that is only available in the premium version of VMware.

Should I download VirtualBox?

If you’re looking to run applications that aren’t compatible with your system or want to test other operating systems, you should download VirtualBox. It’s a free, open-source solution that comes with all the features of enterprise-ready programs. While it may take time during the primary integration, it does run well after the process is complete.

Once a guest operating system is installed, you can easily access and work on it without any hassle. It also comes with an easy-to-use interface that even novice users can command after they’ve gone through the user manual. Moreover, since the tool is monitored by Oracle, users have access to a wide range of documentation and help.

The amount of usage that an average operating system is used for is literally high and that means that we are on a constant verge of updating ourselves to meet the demands of the growing techno world. There are a lot of operating systems available but only a handful of people can actually access those operating systems. This is mainly because of one reason; they do not have suitable hardware to support such an operating system. With a growing trend of many operating systems released into the market, the amount of hardware is significantly less.

That is where the concept of virtual machine steps in. You can actually download the ISO image of any operating system that you would want to operate and based upon your interests, you can actually customize the virtual machine according to your needs. There is a lot of several software out there, that are working on the same niche and the much-sophisticated one is definitely Virtual Box.

1) Download a free copy of Oracle VM VirtualBox from www.virtualbox.org. The file ends up in the Downloads folder; find it, and double-click it to mount the.dmg disk image file (see image below): The Oracle VM VirtualBox installer window. 2) Per the instructions, double-click the package file to run the installer. Let the installer have access.

  3. In this article, I would like to show you how to install a Windows server 2016 on your MacBook virtualbox 64 bit crack - Crack Key For U VirtualBox in simple and easy steps. First, you need to download and install VirtualBox on your Mac.

If you’re a Mac user, there’s no need to sell your Mac and get a Windows computer. You can use VirtualBox, Parallels or VMWare (links lead to academic versions) to run Windows on your Mac. This tutorial was written for VirtualBox, since it’s free and you don’t have to reboot your computer to access Windows (this is why I don’t recommend Bootcamp, since you lose access to your Mac files and software).

Before you do anything else, make sure your Mac is updated to the latest version of OS X your computer supports, and verify it has 8GB or more of RAM. http://www.bravunaclo1979.simpsite.nl/lake-placid-3-torrent.

1) Download Windows 10

You can now download an ISO of the installation disk directly from Microsoft. Most likely, you need the 64-bit version. The file you download will be over 3GB, so get this started and move on!

2) Purchase a Windows License

You will need to purchase a Windows 10 Home (64-bit) license, which is available new on Amazon (search for “Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64 Bit OEM”) or a second-hand license available on eBay. What you really need is the activation windows 11 checker - Crack Key For U, since DVD drives are very uncommon these days.

Please note that you can install Windows without a license key, but you’ll get a nasty reminder if you don’t activate after a few weeks.

3) Download and Install VirtualBox

Save the DMG to a location on your computer where you will be able to find it (Downloads, Desktop, etc.). If you are on a Mac, you need the version for “OS X hosts.” VirtualBox must be installed before it can be used. When you mount the DMG, you must then run the VirtualBox installer, which will place VirtualBox into your Applications folder.

4) Create your Virtual Machine (VM)

  1. When you run VirtualBox virtualbox 64 bit crack - Crack Key For U the first time, there will be no virtual machines (VMs) installed.
  2. Click New in the toolbar, which EMX for Creo Free Activate launch the New Virtual Machine Wizard.
    1. Give your VM a name such as “Windows 10&rdquo.
    2. Select “Windows” as the operating system, and “Windows 10 (64 bit)” as the version.
    3. Go with the recommended memory (2048 MB, or 2 GB).
    4. Leave the default “Create a virtual hard disk now” selected.
    5. Choose “Create.”
  3. Next you must configure the hard disk for your VM to use. The default settings should be fine (the drive is dynamic, so will only use the least amount of space on your host computer). Choose “Create.”
  4. You will now be taken back to the Virtual Machine Manager, which will no longer be empty. You should see the VM you created, and it should be “Powered Off&rdquo. Your VM is a computer within a computer, which means it must be started and shut down like a normal computer (it also means it can get viruses so be careful).

5) Install Windows

  1. Select the new VM you created and choose Settings (gear icon).
  2. Scroll down to the “Storage” section
  3. Select “[Optical Drive] Empty” and choose “Choose/Create a disk image…” A dialog will open.
  4. Choose “Add,” select the ISO you download earlier, and select “Choose”
  5. Click the green “Start” arrow to start your VM.
    You may see a warning that “Auto capture keyboard” is turned on. What is important to note on this screen is the host key, which is set to Left Command key. Use this key to “release” the mouse and keyboard from the VM to switch back to your Mac. You will need to do this if your mouse and keyboard appear to be “stuck” in the VM, meaning you can’t move the mouse out of the VM. Normally after Windows installed, you can simply move your mouse out of the VM window and it will be back on your Mac side.
  6. Your VM should start for the first time. It will boot like a normal computer, but in a window on your Mac. You may get the Virtual Machine host key warning again, select “Do not show this message again” and then “Capture&rdquo. You must remember your host key, which defaults to the left Command key.
  7. Now you’re in the Windows installer. Follow the on-screen instructions, the default settings should be fine. One screen that is a little confusing is the “Upgrade” or “Custom” installation. Since this is a new VM, there is nothing to upgrade, so Custom would be the most logical choice.
Download Virtualbox On Macbook Pro

Your VM may reboot a few times as Windows in installed, but most of your time will be spent watching your screen, so this would be a good time to get up and walk around. Corel draw x7 full crack 32 bit.

6) Configure a Shared Folder

Before you can actually use your new VM, you will need to enable a shared folder. This folder is used to access files on your Mac from your VM. If you don’t have a shared folder, then your VM will be landlocked, meaning you won’t be able to get files on or off (you could theoretically use a USB key). https://brianrodriguez.doodlekit.com/blog/entry/12154305/cost-of-apple-computer. To configure a shared folder, your VM must be powered off.

  1. In your VM configuration window, scroll down to the Shared Folders section. Clicking this heading will open the shared folders Window.
  2. Click the “Add a new shared folder definition” button to add a share.
  3. Click the down arrow in the folder path box and select “Other…&rdquo. Navigate to a folder on your Mac, such as your Desktop or your Documents folder. Once you have chosen your folder, click “Choose&rdquo.
  4. The folder name will automatically populate the “Folder Name” box, but you can change it should you wish. Make sure “Read-only” is not checked, and that “Auto-mount” is checked.

7) Guest Additions

Start up your VM, when it is finished booting and you have added a user account, your final step is to install some software that VirtualBox will use to make using your VM perform a little better. From the “Devices” menu, select virtualbox 64 bit crack - Crack Key For U Guest Additions&rdquo.

8) Use your VM!

You have now successfully installed VirtualBox and Windows. You may now install other software that you will need for courses. If you attached a USB key (or insert a CD or DVD into your computer), you may use it in your VM. You can also install software you download from the internet. Usually installation software ends with the extension .exe. These files can safely be downloaded on your Mac to be used in your VM. Your Mac will ignore them since .exe files are not compatible.

You will need to have Office on either your Mac or PC. Some software may require Office to be installed on Windows.

If you have any questions, please refer to the VirtualBox user manual.

How to run Windows for ARM on M1 Macs using Parallels 16 Technical Preview [Video]

Parallels recently released a technical preview of Parallels 16 that’s compatible with M1 Macs, and it works surprisingly well. The Apple Silicon version of Parallels is specifically designed for ARM-based operating systems, so it won’t work with the x86 version of Windows 10, but instead requires the ARM version of Windows. In this video tutorial, we show you how to run Windows for ARM on M1 Macs using Parallels.

Details to keep in mind

This is a technical preview on both sides of the fence — both from Parallels’ perspective and Microsoft’s. In other words, there’s going to be bugs, and some things just won’t work. For example, arm32 apps outright crash upon launch, and it’s also not possible to suspend the VM. In order to quit your session, you’ll need to shut down windows.

This tutorial is for M1 Macs — the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini — featuring Apple Silicon. It is only designed to work with arm-based virtual machine setups. You can learn more about M1 Macs in my hands-on video exploring the ins and out of Apple’s exciting new hardware.

Upon installation, Parallels provides additional details about running arm-based VMs using its Technical Preview:

Download and install required software

Step 1: Download and install Parallels Desktop 16 for M1 Mac Technical Preview. Parallels will provide an activation key below the download link.

Step 2: Sign up for the Windows Insider Program, and Download the Windows 10 Client ARM64 Insider Preview

Step 3: Open Parallels and drag the Windows10_InsiderPreview_Client_ARM64_en-us file to the Installation Assistant and click Create.

Video: run Windows for ARM on M1 Macs

Subscribe to 9to5mac on YouTube for more videos

Step 4: Parallels 16 will create a new Windows 10 for ARM virtual machine instance. You’ll need to login to Parallels with a user account, and provide the activation key that was issued during step 1.

Step 5: Once logged in and activated, Parallels 16 will configure the Windows 10 virtual machine, install Parallels Tools, and complete the Windows 10 for ARM installation.

Disable Time Sync

In this early build of Parallels for M1 Macs, you’ll need to disable Time Sync or else you’ll run the risk of having an unresponsive Windows VM. To disable Time Sync, click Actions in the Parallels menu bar and select Config. Click the Options tab, and select More Options. In the drop down box next to Time Sync, select Do not sync, and close out of the configuration window.

Enable x64 emulation support

Step 1: In the Windows search bar, search for ‘Insider’ and click on Windows Insider Program settings.

Step 2: Click the Go to Diagnostics & Feedback settings link and turn on optional diagnostic data.

Step 3: Click Link a Windows Insider account, and log in with your Windows account.

Step 4: Once logged in, click Beta Channel (Recommended) under insider settings, and select Dev Channel to gain access to the most recent updates.

Step 5: Click the Home button to go back to the main Windows Settings page, and click Update & Security.

Step 6: Click check for updates under Windows Update, and you should see the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview development build appear. Click the download and install button beneath the build description to install the latest developer build. Windows will take some time to complete the download and installation, so remain patient. Once all updates are installed and your machine best antivirus - Crack Key For U, Parallels Tools will be reinstalled and you’ll need to reboot once more.

To learn more about the recent addition of x64 support in Windows 10 on ARM, see Microsoft’s blog post here.

Bump up the core allocation

For better performance, I suggest bumping the core allocation to four from the default two. Since all M1 Macs feature 8-core CPUs, your macOS installation will retain access to the remaining four cores. To bump up core allocation, shut down Windows, click Action in the menu bar, and select Config.

Under Hardware → CPU and Memory, use the drop down box next to Processors to change it from 2 to 4. Close the configuration window and restart the virtual machine.

9to5Mac’s take

Once at your desktop, you can run arm64 apps and emulated x86/x64 apps. Unfortunately, arm32 apps, like the built-in Skype and Windows Store apps, do not yet work, and launching these apps will result in them crashing. Microsoft Edge (a neutral app, similar to a universal app on Mac) and other native arm64 applications work fairly well.

You can learn more about the app architecture on your installation by using the following PowerShell command: Get-AppxPackage

A free and popular virtualization tool

VirtualBox is free, enterprise-ready virtualization software for Windows users. Developed by the Oracle Corporation, the tool lets users run different operating systems on their computers. It’s a feature-rich product and is one of the only ntlite license key pastebin - Free Activators virtualization tools available as open-source software. It’s updated regularly by its community of users, and Virtualbox 64 bit crack - Crack Key For U ensures that the released product meets professional standards.

The File option gives users access to the media manager, preference module, as well as import and export virtualbox 64 bit crack - Crack Key For U.

VirtualBox doesn’t offer a deep integration option, which is quite an virtualbox 64 bit crack - Crack Key For U if you’re concerned about privacy.

It seemed that was incorrect, Nitro Pro 12.5.0.268 (64-bit) Activation code - Free Activators I didn’t want to argue; I virtualbox 64 bit crack - Crack Key For U wanted a solution.

Mocha Pro 2019 V6.0.1.128 Product Key - Crack Key For U it seemed that that icon would disappear, sometimes, after even an unsuccessful activation effort.

Only use the following if you are unable to activate and you virtualbox 64 bit crack - Crack Key For U a legally-purchased copy of Windows XP.

Later, however, I encountered a situation where Virtualbox 64 bit crack - Crack Key For U was not able to get past the login screen.

There, Virtualbox 64 bit crack - Crack Key For U typed rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnkand clicked OK.
